Say Goodbye To Cellulite For Good

Cellulite is just the fancy name given to the collections of fat that push against the connective tissue beneath a person’s skin, which causes the surface of the skin to dimple or pucker and look lumpy. Although many people associate cellulite with being overweight (yes, even size zero models have to battle cellulite), there are plenty of other factors that contribute to the “orange peel” effect. These include stress, lack of exercise, poor diet, genetics and female hormones (which accounts for the fact that guys seem to be immune to it. Damn them!). But thankfully there are ways to minimise its appearance…

Healthy Diet
A healthy diet plays an important role in keeping the signs of cellulite at bay. Eat plenty of fiber and whole grain foods (such as bran and oat cereals), since they help to remove waste and toxins from the intestinal tract, as well as fruits and vegetables. Also, drink plenty of water. If you increase your daily intake of water, your body will begin to shed its excess fat, including the fat stored as cellulite. The water will also help strengthen the collagen in your skin, helping to reduce the lumpy look.

Since cellulite is fat, excess weight can contribute to it. That’s why it’s important to engage in physical exercise like walking, jogging, swimming, yoga, etc. several times a week. In addition to cardiovascular exercises, strength training programs that target cellulite-prone areas such as the buttocks and thighs will aid in reducing cellulite. Try doing some targeted cellulite exercises like squats and lunges a few times a week for noticeable results.

Squats are an excellent workout because they target the lower body, primarily the quadriceps, buttocks and abdominal muscles and will enable you to build lean muscle. Additionally, muscles are metabolically active and burn more fat than any other type of tissue. Thus by performing squats, you will tone your body, burn calories and build lean muscles which in turn, will burn more calories. To perform a squat, stand straight, ensuring that your torso is straight and your legs are wide apart. With dumbbells or a medicine ball in your hands, which are extended in front of you, bend your knees and slowly lower your hips. Lower your body into a squat, contracting your abdominal muscles in the process. Remain in the squat for five seconds and return to the starting position, contracting your abdominal muscles. Repeat as desired.

Lunges are another strength training exercise that will tone your body, help in building lean muscles and reducing the appearance of cellulite on your legs and buttocks. To perform a lunge, enter in a split stance with your dominant foot in front and the non-dominant foot behind. Place your weight on your back foot and slowly begin to bend that knee. While bending that knee, begin to bend your front knee until it is in a 90-degree angle. While performing a lunge, ensure that your chest straight and contract your abdominal muscles and hamstrings. Hold this position for five seconds and return to the starting position by contracting your abdominal muscles, buttocks and hamstrings. Repeat as desired.

Dry Body Brushing
Dry body brushing breaks up fatty deposits, aids in lymphatic drainage, eliminates toxins and stimulates circulation while giving you an amazing exfoliation. Although it won’t rid your body of cellulite completely, regular dry body brushing will see visible results on the appearance of your buttocks, hips and thighs. You’ll need a soft, long handled brush, made out of natural fibres that are not going to scratch your skin. An idea brush material is Sisal – a soft hemp used to make rope (and brushes obviously).

Start at your feet and sweep up the legs in long, light brisk movements. All brushing should be towards the heart as this encourages the return of blood to this area and helps your lymphatic flow.

Pay particular attention to cellulite-prone areas like thighs, buttocks and stomach. Brush your stomach with a circular clock-wise motion.

Brush your arms with an upward motion, moving towards the heart.

Don’t be too rough. Over brushing will irritate the skin.

Dry body brushing is best done first thing in the morning, when the increased blood flow will help wake you up.

Jump in the shower straight after to help move those toxins you stirred up out of your system.

Creams, Potions and Lotions
There are hundreds of anti-cellulite creams on the market promising to firm your skin and reduce the appearance of cellulite but these need to be used in conjunction with the above. Our personal favourite? The Murad Cellulite Solution Regimen which dramatically reduces the appearance of cellulite through a comprehensive internal and external approach. The regimen is made up of their Firm and Tone Dietary Supplement Pack, Firm and Tone Serum and Body Firming Cream. At $460.00 for the entire set it is expensive but I promise you will see amazing results, so it’s worth every penny.

Get A Tan
If worse comes to worse then your best bet is to get a tan, fake of course! A nice golden brown tan will help hide any pasty lumpy bits, because let’s be honest, everything looks better when you have tan.
