We talk beauty, hair straightening and her love of Australian fashion labels with the owner of MiSHKA Boutique, Michelle Johnson.
How would you describe your personal style, fashion and beauty wise?
My personal style is ever-evolving but I’m definitely one for classic pieces mixed in with a statement jacket or some amazing accessories. I like to have those pieces that I can wear every season and then those gorgeous insert pieces that add some fun into the mix. Beauty-wise, I’m always quite understated – I love to keep it simple and fresh and limit the heaviness of make-up etc.
What was the inspiration behind MiSHKA Boutique?
MiSHKA came about after realising there was a niche in the New Zealand market for all the amazing Australian labels that I loved but could never find here. I also loved the idea of having a hand-picked selection that brought the best of each label to compliment one-another in a format that allowed our customers to have an experience and choice when shopping. From the start, it was imperative that we got our design mix, customer experience and service in alignment – every detail down to our boxes and handwritten notes was the essence of what MiSHKA set out to achieve.

What does your skincare routine consist of?
I use Bio elements as my primary skin care range from cleaners to toners, exfoliator’s and moisturizers and then I also apply Tamanu oil and Lavender oil every night which is great for problem skin. Twice a week I also steam my face and apply a Tailor Masque which makes your skin feel amazing after.
Best trick to brighten up a morning after face?
A really good face clean and masque and then I apply Black Magic spray tan which has the highest grade DHA available on the market. If that isn’t available, then nothing beats some cold tea bags on the eyes and then applying some bronzer, rouge and a subtle lip colour.
How do you stay healthy?
I work out at the Exercise Room in Parnell and incorporate boxing, Pilates reformer, TRX and cardio training. I also have a trainer once a week to keep me going with goals and mix up my routines. I make healthy food a lifestyle choice and don’t beat myself up if I slip now and again but I really enjoy making raw and natural food and I’m lucky to have some amazing best friends who are an inspiration with their healthy living.
Who is your beauty icon and why?
I can’t say there is a celebrity that I look towards as a beauty icon as such but more those women who sit next to you in a café that exude warmth and have that twinkle in their eyes – those are the ones that I want to interrupt their quiet breakfast and ask what their secret is!
What has been your biggest beauty disaster?
Straightening my hair to oblivion…I actually used to use an iron over a handkerchief before GHD!! I naturally have straight hair but nothing looks worse than too straight- not only does it look harsh but also damages your hair entirely. Another one is attempting smoky eye .. never worked!
What is the best beauty advice you’ve ever been given?
• Look after your skin

• Eat Well and drink lots of water
• Evening Primrose oil
• Avoid direct sunlight on your face
How do you treat yourself?
My little luxuries include fortnightly massages, regular facials, long lunches with my best friends and mini getaways.
